De Oranje Regenjas (The Orange Raincoat)

During the 1998 World Cup (soccer) the Dutch television ran a series of programs about the Dutch Team's preparations for the competition.
There was a profile of ach member of the Dutch National Football team and the coach. As part of this program Harry Vermegen presented each player with an "Oranje Regenjas" (an orange raincoat).
Orange is the colour of the Dutch National Team and this raincoat is ORANGE. In the program they had to try it on and tie it up in Harry's special way.

Edwin van der Sar got one of course. He's the Dutch National Team Goalkeeper, the ex-Goalkeeper of Ajax (in the Golden Years when they won everything!), now keeper for Juventus (Italy), and in my opinion the best keeper in the world. I should know, he use to live about 200 meters from my house!

During the World Cup itself the Oranje Reganjas stayed in Holland. It was on show in the local greengrocers shop here in Voorhout.

Voorhout is a very important place. Primarily because I lived there, but also because Edwin, his wife Anna-Marie and their children, Edwin's parents, and Anna-Maria's parents all live there.

Ben, the owner of the 'van Kesteren' greengrocers shop and Edwin's father-in-law, not only displayed the the Oranje Regenjas but also ran a competition where the prizes were 2 of Edwin's football shirts and a pair of keepers gloves.
I didn't win!

I managed to get a photograph taken of me in the famous "Edwin van der Sar Oranje regenjas". Some people thought I was mad to do it, but I couldn't let this opportunity go by.
